GERD is a condition in which you have acid reflux that occurs often. Acid reflux is when the acid in your stomach regurgitates into your esophagus. The acid that comes up into the esophagus can give you a burning sensation, and it can actually burn your esophagus with time. If you have acid reflux often, you may have GERD and should be treated by your physician for this disease. Read on for a few things you may be able to do to help with this condition at home.
Watch Your Diet
What you're eating may be what is causing this condition in the first place. High-acid foods or drinks may be leading to your acid reflux. Highly acid foods such as spicy foods, some fruits such as citrus fruits and tomatoes, coffee, alcohol, and even chocolate can all lead to acid reflux. If you have acid reflux often, or if you have been diagnosed with GERD, make sure you limit these foods as much as possible or at least limit them before bed, as your acid reflux can worsen when you lie down.
Don't Eat Late
Eating or drinking later in the evening can lead to acid reflux, and as stated above, it can worsen when you lay down. If you eat or drink too late in the evening, you may experience acid reflux when you are trying to fall asleep at night. This can cause other issues as well, such as choking in the middle of the night. Choking in the middle of the night because of your acid reflux is not the way you want to be woken up.
Control Stress And Anxiety
Stress or anxiety can be causing your GERD. If you have a lot of stress in your life, or if you have issues with anxiety, it may be causing your GERD in the first place or worsening it if you already have it. Try some calming techniques or try doing something to ease your stress. Yoga is something that may be able to help, or you can do other things such as working out or playing a sport to help get rid of your anxiety.
