Tips for Lowering Your Cholesterol Levels

Health & Medical Blog

To help maintain your overall health, you may want to start keeping your cholesterol levels under control. To help you do that, you will want to review the following tips and adhere to any instructions given to you by your health care professional.

Lower the Amount of Trans Fat You Consume

While it may be difficult to completely ban trans fat from your diet, since it may be in a lot of the foods you enjoy eating, you can certainly at least cut back on how much of it you eat. When shopping for foods, look at the labels and limit how much food you purchase that contains trans fat. It is also important to know that partially hydrogenated oil is just another name for trans fat, so you will want to avoid as much of that as possible as well.

Try to Lose Some Weight

If you have some excess body fat that you could stand to lose, you might want to think about tending to that now. By simply dropping a few pounds, you can dramatically reduce your bad cholesterol levels. Talk with your primary care doctor, as he or she will be able to compare your current issue with cholesterol and your weight to help you understand just how many pounds you should lose in order to regain control of your cholesterol levels.

Eat More Fiber

Fiber not only fills you up faster, it actually stops your body from absorbing too much cholesterol that is in the foods you eat. By simply increasing your consumption of things such as apples, oatmeal, prunes, and beans, you will be able to see a dramatic drop in your LDL cholesterol.

Use Olive Oil Instead of Butter

When cooking or baking, you will want to try to use olive oil in place of butter whenever possible. This is because butter contains ingredients that will increase your cholesterol levels, while olive oil actually has some good fats in it. The good fats will not add to any existing cholesterol problem and it can actually provide your body with extra antioxidants that it needs and improve the condition of your heart.

Along with using the previously mentioned tips to lower your cholesterol, you might also try to relax a little more often. Reducing the amount of stress you put yourself through can do wonders for your body including lowering your cholesterol levels.

Finding the Right Healthcare: Putting Families First

A few years ago, I experienced a huge health scare with my blood pressure. My doctor at the time didn't offer evening or late night care, which forced me to visit the local emergency room for help. Although it may seem like a small thing to some people, not having access to my doctor when I needed it really bothered me. It bothered me so much that I searched for a new doctor after my child was born. Now, I'm happy with my family's new physician. The doctor offers after-hour care, which is a wonderful thing for us. My blog offers tips on how to find the right doctor for your family, as well as many other services you might need one day. So, please read through the blog for the information you need now.
